United Against Hate Week
2024 Theme - Anti-Bullying
To stand united against bullying, the Community Foundation volunteers have pulled together this series of community events and activities to educate, support and empower you to fight this prevalent form of hate expression. The purpose of this week is to bring awareness around the issues that continue to plague our community members, give our community members tools for addressing anti-bullying and to bring the community together in addressing this issue together.
Commmunity Events
City of San Carlos Proclamation
Monday, September 23, 2024, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Our City Council helped create awareness around the important topic of inclusion and anti-bullying. San Carlos has long been known as the “City of Good Living,” and as our community faces challenges such as growing diversity, the Foundation recognizes that only by working together can we ensure that all of our residents enjoy a “good living,”
We applaud the efforts of the Council to recognize United Against Hate - Inclusion programs and appreciate them as a partner as we work to build community together.
Teacher Appreciation at Reach & Teach
Monday, September 23, 2024, 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
The Reach And Teach bookshop team invited local teachers to join them in the United Against Hate - Inclusion program with a visit to their shop where they served complimentary food and beverages, displays of books and other resources on inclusion and anti-bullying, cooperative games you can try, including the Goodbye Bully Machine game, and some fun giveaways.
People also met representatives of a few local organizations with information on their programs for kids and families.
Each teacher also received a $5 Reach And Teach gift card (while supplies last).

Upstander Training
“If you see something, do something!”
Huge thank you for our co-sponsors, Parks & Recreation Foundation of San Carlos!
We all want our kids to stand up for what’s right. And it’s right to take a stand when they hear someone being bullied, belittled, or are witness to unkind behavior. As parents and adults we can model kindness and civil discourse, but what happens when your student encounters a bully? These Upstander workshops address this issue, teaching our youth how to recognize bullies and how to respond as Upstanders.
The Workshops were held at the Youth Center’s Dance Studio and were facilitated by staff from OneLife. We provided snacks for the Middle School students and dinner for the High School students. After the workshops, we invited students to stay to create a collaborative art project, which was displayed at the Youth Center.
Parenting in the Digital Era: Supporting Dialogue & Strategies for Building Healthy Tech Habits
Presented by DigitalTAT2 and co-sponsored by Friends of the San Carlos Library
Thursday, September 26, 2024, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
We know that bullying behavior often starts online, so we addressed this issue during our week.
We engaged MyDigitalTAT2, a local leader in providing training for parents on this topic. Their training helped participants gain a better understanding of what young people are facing online and discover ways to talk with youth about their use of digital media.
Participants practiced strategies alongside young people for developing a healthy, balanced relationship with technology and connect with others in the community who are facing similar challenges.

Community Conversation & Dinner
Sunday, September 22, 2024, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
We hosted a community supper to talk about “Inclusion.” For the last several years, the Foundation has presented programs during the nationwide campaign “United Against Hate.”
This year after listening to San Carlos residents and leaders, the issue of bullying arose as one of particular concern, especially (but not limited) to our youth. In response, the Foundation has adopted the theme of “Inclusion,” as this year’s focus during September 22-28.
During the week we sponsored workshops for our youth and parents, collaborated with local businesses, and partnered with other San Carlos groups to raise awareness about bullying. But first, we wanted to give residents of our community a chance to gather, share a meal, and share their stories about being included - - or excluded.
Open Mic Night
Friday, September 27, 2024, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
We finished the week on learning and thinking about bullying with an evening on Laurel Street, listening to the local talent share their music and good humor.
Thank you to Clock Tower Music for hosting this event!
Saturday Morning Community Forum
Saturday, September 28, 2024, 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM
In this forum we wound up the week of exploring the topic of inclusion and bullying. We discussed what we learned this week, shared more stories from the workshops and trainings, and talked about any next steps community participants would like to take.
This was a facilitated discussion mediated by our friends at the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center.
